FEMINIST GBV GLOSSARY BY & FOR AFRICA

The words we use to describe gender-based violence matter. They shape how violence is understood, how survivors are treated, and how communities respond. Clear, inclusive language can help challenge stigma, affirm survivors’ dignity and strengthen collective action.

The Feminist GBV Glossary for Africa was developed by a committee of representatives from civil society organisations that received grants through the Feminist Opportunities Now (FON) project. Bringing together knowledge and experience from organisations working across Africa, it offers a shared vocabulary grounded in African feminist perspectives and the realities of community work.

The glossary explores different forms of gender-based violence alongside concepts such as consent, bodily autonomy, intersectionality, patriarchy and survivor-centred care. It also examines local expressions and the ways language can reinforce discrimination or support dignity, agency and inclusion. Throughout, it encourages reflection on the social norms and unequal power relations that allow violence to persist.

Designed as a practical reference, the glossary which has a French and an English version can support civil society organisations, activists, journalists, educators and service providers in their everyday work. It can inform training, awareness campaigns, advocacy, programme development and communication with survivors and communities.

This collective resource reflects the expertise of feminist organisations and the value of learning across countries and contexts. Conceived as a living document, it invites continued dialogue as language, knowledge and feminist practice evolve.

Explore and download the glossary below, and use it to support more inclusive conversations and action against gender-based violence.

Feminist Opportunities Now is funded by the French Government through the French Development Agency (AFD). The project is led by IPPF Africa Region, in partnership with CREA, Empow’Her, FIDH and Médecins du Monde.
