Who We Are and Scope

Feminist Opportunities Now (FON) is a consortium-led initiative that supports feminist civil society organisations, movements, and groups working to address gender-based violence and advance gender equality. The project operates across Africa, Asia, and Latin America and is implemented through consortium partners including IPPF Africa Region, CREA, Empow’Her, FIDH, and Médecins du Monde France, with funding support from AFD and MEAE.

This Privacy Notice explains how we collect, use, store, and share personal data when you visit https://feministnow.org, contact us, subscribe to communications, apply for funding, participate in FON activities, submit content, appear in FON stories or media, or otherwise interact with FON online or through related digital channels.

This notice applies where FON, IPPF Africa Region, or a FON consortium partner decides why and how personal data is processed. In some activities, a consortium partner may act as an independent controller or joint controller. Where this applies, that partner may provide additional privacy information.

Personal Data We Collect

We only collect personal data that is relevant to the purpose for which it is provided or generated. This may include:

• Identity and contact information: Name, email address, phone number, organisation, role/title, country, region, language preference, and other contact details.

• Contact form and communication data: Information you submit through website forms or email, including subject, message, enquiry details, attachments, and our responses.

• Funding and application data: Information contained in expressions of interest, application forms, proposals, supporting documents, statements of integrity, due-diligence documents, organisational profiles, monitoring reports, and grant-related correspondence.

• Financial and transaction data: Bank/payment details, grant payment records, invoices, procurement details, tax or audit information, where needed for grants, donations, services, reimbursements, or legal/accountability requirements.

• Event and participation data: Registration details, attendance records, dietary/accessibility needs, travel or logistical details, feedback, photos, video, or audio recordings where applicable.

• Story, media, and publication data: Biographies, affiliations, quotes, photos, videos, case studies, consent forms, and other materials submitted for publication or communications.

• Technical and usage data: IP address, device identifiers, browser type/version, operating system, referral URLs, pages visited, timestamps, cookie identifiers, analytics data, security logs, and similar website usage information.

• Information from partners or third parties: Information shared by consortium partners, funders, service providers, public sources, social media platforms, or organisations you are affiliated with, where lawful and relevant to FON’s work.

Sensitive or Special-Category Data

Because FON works on gender-based violence, SRHR, women’s and girls’ rights, feminist organising, and support to civil society organisations, some interactions may involve sensitive or special-category personal data. This may include information relating to health, sex life, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, ethnicity, political opinions, religion or belief, trade union membership, safety risks, safeguarding concerns, or experiences of violence or discrimination.

We do not ask for sensitive personal data unless it is necessary for a specific FON purpose, such as safeguarding, accessibility support, grant assessment, due diligence, monitoring and evaluation, storytelling with consent, or legal/accountability requirements. Where required by law, we will rely on explicit consent or another applicable legal condition and will apply additional safeguards.

Important Notice: Please do not submit personal details about survivors, children, at-risk individuals, or third parties unless the information is necessary, you are authorised to share it, and appropriate consent or safeguarding/legal grounds exist. Where possible, anonymise or pseudonymise sensitive details before submission.

How We Collect Personal Data

We may collect personal data directly from you when you complete a form, contact us, subscribe to updates, apply for funding, register for an event, submit documents, consent to a story or publication, respond to surveys, or communicate with FON.

We may also collect personal data automatically through cookies, server logs, and similar technologies when you visit the website. In addition, we may receive personal data from consortium partners, funders, service providers, assessment panels, public sources, social media platforms, or organisations involved in FON activities.

How We Use Personal Data

We use personal data for the following purposes:

• To administer funding calls, expressions of interest, applications, due diligence, grant-making, contracting, payments, reporting, monitoring, and evaluation.

• To prevent, detect, and respond to fraud, misuse, security incidents, safeguarding risks, or unlawful activity.

• To establish, exercise, or defend legal claims and protect the rights, safety, and property of FON, consortium partners, participants, grantees, and the public.

Lawful Bases for Processing

Depending on the activity and applicable law, we may rely on one or more of the following lawful bases:

• Consent: For newsletters, non-essential cookies, certain photographs/videos, stories, testimonials, and processing of sensitive data where consent is required.

• Contract or pre-contract steps: To assess applications, enter into grant or service agreements, make payments, manage events, or provide requested services.

• Legitimate interests: To run the website, respond to enquiries, improve services, maintain records, prevent fraud, secure systems, and manage FON activities, balanced against individual rights and freedoms.

When We Share Personal Data

• Funders, donors, auditors, and evaluators: Including AFD and MEAE, where required for project accountability, reporting, monitoring, audit, or compliance.

• Reviewers and advisors: Grant assessment panels, consultants, reviewers, trainers, facilitators, and technical support providers engaged for FON activities.

• Service providers: Website hosting, email, analytics, cloud storage, payment, finance, security, communications, translation, and other service providers who process data on our behalf.

• Professional advisors: Insurers, banks, auditors, legal advisers, and regulators.

FON operates across several countries and works with international consortium partners, funders, and service providers. Retention periods vary depending on the type of data, the purpose of processing, legal and donor requirements, the sensitivity of the data, and whether the information forms part of official grant, finance, safeguarding, audit, or project records. Where possible, we anonymise, pseudonymise, or delete personal data when it is no longer needed.

Security

We use appropriate technical, organisational, and administrative measures to protect personal data against unauthorised access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure. These include access controls, confidentiality obligations, secure systems, data minimisation, staff guidance, supplier due diligence, backups, and incident response processes.
