Raising Awareness About FGM in Momirasso: An Initiative by the NGO DJIGUI TUGU

By: Djigui Tugu

On February 19, 2025, the NGO DJIGUI TUGU organized an awareness campaign against Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) in the locality of Momirasso, in the Ferkessédougou department. This initiative was part of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM and aimed to inform and raise awareness among the population about the dangers of this practice.

Why Momirasso?

The choice of this locality was not random. Momirasso has a growing number of FGM cases, a practice that continues to be carried out in secrecy. Faced with this alarming reality, DJIGUI TUGU, with financial support from FON, deemed it crucial to take action and alert the local population to the harmful consequences of FGM.

How the Event Unfolded

The awareness day brought together various stakeholders, including community leaders, women, youth, and healthcare professionals. Several approaches were used to engage the public and encourage collective awareness:

🔹 Thematic discussions: Public health experts explained the medical and psychological consequences of FGM.
🔹 Personal testimonies: Survivors and affected families shared their experiences, highlighting the suffering caused by this practice.
🔹 Commitment from community leaders: Traditional and religious leaders were invited to publicly take a stand against FGM.

Impact and Future Outlook

This initiative helped shift mindsets in Momirasso. Many parents and young girls spoke out against FGM and expressed their desire to promote a new social dynamic based on respect for the rights of women and girls. Those suffering from the after-effects of the practice were encouraged to seek support at the social center.

However, the fight against FGM requires ongoing efforts. DJIGUI TUGU plans to continue its work through further awareness campaigns, training programs for young girls, and advocacy efforts with local authorities.
